Abstract: The right to water and sanitation is internationally recognized as a fundamental human right Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) is one of the 17 global targets established by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda, which calls for ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The present research consisted of two stages: 1) carried out in 2006 and 2007, with field data collection and 2) an update until 2023 with textual analysis and introduction of new additions. In the results, from 2006 and 2007, it was found that the increase in rainfall was significantly correlated with the increase in acute diarrhea, but without correlation with Hepatitis A. Despite the advances made in almost two decades, between 2006 and 2023, the results of samples with residual chlorine content, the pH, are, in disagreement with the legislation, indicate that the distribution network still has problems with the maintenance and operation of the structure, from collection to distribution to the population. Occasional and punctual contamination can also occur because the distribution network is in several places with clandestine drilling. It is recommended that the municipality of São Luis increase its environmental public policies and partnerships with public and private institutions for a more effective management of water resources, and that the public sectors, civil society, and private entities increase investment in environmental education. The present research aims to offer, in addition to the diagnosis of the quality of water for human consumption provided by the public supply systems in the urban area of São Luís, subsidies for the identification of risks to human health in the consumption of water in disagreement with the standards of potability and necessary corrective measures.
