Abstract: Objective: To carry out the classification of pediatric patients and the dimensioning of nursing staff in a university hospital. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. Data were collected in October 2016. Individuals from 0 to 15 years old were included and indigenous or foreign individuals were excluded. Dini's rating scale and a structured form were used to obtain hospitalization data. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics using EpiInfo®. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee by opinion nº 1.614.18. Results: Of the 44 patients analyzed, 32 were classified as minimal care (77.2%). Most male (56.8%), aged between 4 and 6 years (31.8%). The prevalent hospitalization time was between 1 and 6 days (61.36%). The most frequent cause of hospitalization was respiratory disorders (27.3%). Most residents of Campo Grande (61.4%) and were accompanied by their mothers (90.9%). Regarding the dimensioning of the nursing staff, a surplus of professionals in the sector was evidenced. Conclusion: This study provided knowledge of the demand for care, pointing out potentialities related to the number of nursing staff in a pediatric hospitalization unit.
