Abstract: This work deals with the synthesis and characterization of graphene oxide (GO) using the modified Hummers method. The characterization of GO was performed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), proving the presence of the typical functional groups of the material, as well as the temperature at which the loss of labile oxygen occurs. Subsequently, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanocomposites with different GO loads (200 to 500 ppm) were prepared by extrusion in a twin-screw extruder. The nanocomposites were analyzed by SEM, revealing a good dispersion of GO in the polymer matrix. It was also observed that the increase in the GO content resulted in a more granular morphology, with corrugations characteristic of intercalated composites.
