Abstract: The research aimed to characterize biochar and hydrochar produced from green coconut waste (Cocos nucifera L.) via slow pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization, respectively, assessing their potential as adsorbent materials. Green coconut shell biomass was subjected to slow pyrolysis in a muffle furnace at 500 °C and to hydrothermal carbonization at 180 °C for 6 h. The resulting materials were characterized for moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, pH, point of zero charge (PZC), surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and adsorption capacity toward methylene blue dye. The biochar exhibited lower moisture and volatile matter contents, higher fixed carbon, and an alkaline pH, whereas the hydrochar retained more oxygenated functional groups. SEM analysis revealed a more porous surface in the biochar. Both materials efficiently removed the cationic dye, with maximum adsorption observed under slightly acidic to neutral pH conditions. The results demonstrate that—even under moderate thermal conditions—biochar and hydrochar derived from green coconut waste display distinct and promising physicochemical properties for environmental remediation applications, reinforcing their viability as sustainable alternatives for the valorization of agro-industrial residues.
