Abstract: Studies have shown that regular physical exercise increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), an essential protein for neuronal development and plasticity. In addition, exercise stimulates the growth of gray matter, increases blood flow to the hippocampus and promotes neurogenesis. Myokines such as irisin also play an important role in muscle- brain communication. Irisin is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and also has neuroprotective effects. The communication between muscle and brain mediated by myokines is essential for understanding the benefits of exercise for brain health. The study of these proteins provides valuable information on the molecular mechanisms involved in brain function and contributes to strategies for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders.
