Abstract: Neuromuscular blockers (NMBs) are drugs that interrupt or simulate the transmission of nerve impulses, causing paralysis of the skeletal muscles. Thus, these drugs, along with sedatives, are widely used when there is a need to perform a rapid sequence intubation procedure, as they allow the patient to become unconscious quickly and efficiently. Currently, there are depolarizing BNMs, such as succinylcholine, which is the most widely used, and non-depolarizing ones, such as rocuronium. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the use of rocuronium as the first choice BNM in intubation procedures that use the rapid sequence. For this study, an integrative literature review of scientific articles published between the years 2012 and 2022 was conducted. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 articles of the 377 initially found were left to be evaluated. After analyzing the articles and their samples, it was found that the patients used for the studies had common characteristics, such as age, the environment where anesthesia would be performed, and their pre-anesthetic condition. In addition, it was evaluated which drugs and doses were used in each study and the results of the comparisons made between those drugs and rocuronium. Thus, it was concluded that among the non-depolarizing BNMs, rocuronium ends up being the best option. On the other hand, when compared to the depolarizing BNM, it achieved results similar to this one.
