Abstract: Sepsis is a condition characterized by the host's imbalanced response to an invading microorganism, resulting in organ failure. Dysregulation of the inflammatory state is a key pathophysiological feature, leading to metabolic and cellular alterations contributing to organic dysfunction if not controlled or diagnosed early. If a patient exhibits persistent hypotension and hyperlactatemia even after fluid replacement, the condition is termed septic shock. Studies demonstrate that approximately 30% of patients admitted to Intensive Care Units are diagnosed with sepsis or septic shock, with a mortality rate exceeding 50% and increased hospital costs due to prolonged stays and performed procedures. Therefore, it is essential to observe changes arising from this condition, along with parameters aiding in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of patients, facilitating clinical decision-making and appropriate management. In this context, the primary goal of this study is to comprehend the pathophysiological changes associated with sepsis, along with clinical and laboratory evaluation parameters that can assist in the swift and precise diagnosis of patients with sepsis or septic shock.
