• Abstract: Introduction: Patient safety is a topic that has gained great importance and appreciation throughout the healthcare process. Invasive procedures, such as peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), require specific care to ensure safety, preventing infections and other injuries during catheter insertion and maintenance. Objective: expand and deepen knowledge about patient safety with PICC, reflect on the role of nurses in the care provided to patients with PICC, expand understanding of patient safety with PICC pre, trans and post-procedure and act on patient safety in catheter maintenance. Method: descriptive and theoretical study related to safety before, during and after PICC insertion. Results: safety-related methods used at three stages are described, in the pre-procedure, the moment before PICC insertion, and the patient's clinical and therapeutic conditions are evaluated. During the procedure, with the standardization of techniques to achieve an assertive result, the third moment describes maintenance practices to prevent problems, such as infections, phlebitis, thrombosis, obstructions and catheter ruptures. Furthermore, care performed during hospital admission and outpatient follow-up of PICC patients is described, emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring of appropriate techniques to ensure patient safety.
