SEGURANÇA DO PACIENTE E O CONTROLE DAS INFECÇÕES RELACIONADAS À ASSISTÊNCIA À SAÚDE
As infecções relacionadas à assistência à saúde são um problema de saúde pública e o seu controle tem sido um desafio mundial para a segurança do paciente. Considerado um evento adverso, essas infecções trazem consequências para pacientes, organizações e sistemas de saúde, aumentando a morbimortalidade, prolongando a hospitalização e aumentando os custos assistenciais. Por esse motivo, tem sido tema prioritário na agenda de saúde nacional e internacional. O presente material traz um breve histórico sobre a segurança do paciente no mundo e no Brasil, alinhado ao contexto das infecções relacionadas à saúde; descreve os fatores de risco e causais associados à sua ocorrência, considerando a abordagem sistêmica e humana do incidente; e lista estratégias para o controle e prevenção dessas infecções no âmbito da estrutura e do processo de trabalho no ambiente de prática. A intenção deste capítulo não é esgotar o aprendizado/conhecimento acerca da segurança do paciente e sua relação com o controle das infecções relacionadas à assistência à saúde, mas despertar sobre a importância desse tema e da necessidade de implantar estratégias multifacetadas, alicerçadas à gestão de riscos de forma proativa, como um caminho para o desenvolvimento da cultura de segurança.

Abstract:
Healthcare-associated infections are a public health problem, and their control has been a worldwide challenge for patient safety. Considered an adverse event, these infections have consequences for patients, organizations, and health systems, increasing morbidity and mortality, extending hospital stay, and increasing healthcare costs. For this reason, it has been a main concern on the national and international health agenda. This work offers a brief history of patient safety in the world and Brazil, in line with the context of health-associated infections; describes the risk and causal factors associated with its occurrence, considering the systemic and human approach to the incident; and it lists strategies for the control and prevention of these infections within the structure and the work process in the practice setting. The intention of this chapter is not to exhaust the learning/knowledge about patient safety and its relationship with the control of healthcare-associated infections, but to arouse about the theme’s relevance and the need to implement multifaceted strategies, based on risk management proactively, as a path to the development of the safety culture.
