Abstract: Fire safety in higher education institutions requires coordination between infrastructure, legislation, risk management, and educational actions capable of guiding the academic community. This work analyzes the case study of the modular annex to Building II of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, West Zone Campus (UERJ-ZO), based on a fire that occurred in 2023 in an air conditioning unit in Chemistry Laboratory 3. The objective is to discuss how the evaluation of fire protection conditions can contribute to teaching, prevention, and the formation of a safety culture in the university environment. The methodology was based on applied, qualitative, and descriptive research, with normative review, field survey, photographic records, and analysis of the requirements of the Fire and Panic Safety Code of the State of Rio de Janeiro and related technical standards. The results indicate weaknesses related to signage, emergency lighting, extinguishing capacity, response organization, and the need for brigade training. It is concluded that the case can be used as a teaching resource in courses, training programs, and outreach activities, allowing for the integration of technical knowledge, risk perception, and preventive procedures
