Abstract: Introduction: Mental health has been a much discussed topic over the last few decades. However, it has suffered an intense slowdown in the processes of improving the health and quality of life of psychiatric patients. Certainly, the Psychiatric Reform made it possible and still makes it possible to emphasize the substitute services of asylums and the understanding of madness as a care process. Aims: To expose the trajectory and struggle of the mental health process in Brazil along with the demystification of madness over the centuries. Methods: Quantitative approach, literature review, descriptive and comparative, using DeCs: Psychiatry, mental health and mental disorder. Eight articles from Scielo were used, in addition to six magazines and a book. Discussion: Psychiatric patients are still stigmatized as crazy even with the advancement of psychiatry. Thus, it is understood the importance of the discussion on the theme for the inclusion and understanding of psychiatric patients in society. Conclusions: Taking care of and talking about mental health has an increasingly relevant importance, in view of population illness. Identifying and characterizing such a problem in society is extremely important for demystifying madness and for the progress of psychiatry in Brazil.
