Abstract: This article discusses the relationship between female teaching work and the illness of basic education teachers in Brazil, articulating the legal-constitutional perspective of the evolution of women's rights with studies on gender, the sexual division of labour and worker health. It is based on the hypothesis that the feminization of teaching is the result of a historical, ideological and patriarchal construction that socially and economically devalues the profession and, at the same time, naturalizes the suffering of female teachers, making it institutionally invisible Through bibliographic and documentary research, empirical studies on working conditions and sick leaves of teachers are examined, with emphasis on the prevalence of psychic disorders, Burnout Syndrome and musculoskeletal and vocal complaints. It is concluded that the institutional invisibility of teacher illness stems from the overlap between the devaluation of the profession, the double or triple workday imposed on women and the absence of social, symbolic and legal recognition of the suffering experienced by these workers.
