Abstract: Sarcopenia is characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength and is associated with worse clinical outcomes in cancer patients undergoing surgical procedures. This study aimed to analyze the influence of sarcopenia as a prognostic factor in oncologic surgery. This is a literature review conducted using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Springer Link, BMC Surgery, and Frontiers in Oncology databases, employing descriptors related to sarcopenia, oncologic surgery, and postoperative prognosis. Six studies were selected, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and narrative reviews. The main findings demonstrated an association between sarcopenia and increased postoperative complications, higher surgical morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospital stay, and reduced overall survival. In addition, sarcopenic obesity was associated with even poorer prognosis. It is concluded that sarcopenia represents an important prognostic marker in oncologic surgery, and its early identification is essential for better risk stratification and perioperative planning.
