Abstract: Sambaquis are described as deposits of shells and food, which in addition to archaeological records, form fertile soils when compared to nearby soils not influenced by this anthropogenic management. This study aims to carry out a non-exhaustive systematic literature review and map the location of sambaquis in the state of Rio de Janeiro. To this end, 60 scientific journals were selected from the Scopus, Web of Science and SciELO platforms, using keywords. The descriptive-documentary research method was used and the papers were categorized into thematic groups. The digital mapping of the sambaquis recorded in the papers analyzed was done using software such as QGIS and Google Earth Pro. An evaluation of the research objects reveals that there are gaps and need of in-depth studies on aspects related to soil, such as the carbon (C) stabilization process, pyrogenic C, calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) dynamics. Although they have been identified in the south and north of Rio de Janeiro, the mapping of sambaquis in the studies shows a greater concentration in the central-eastern region of the Rio de Janeiro coast, and it is necessary to look more closely at their occurrence in the other regions of the state. It is highlighted the importance of including these soils in the Brazilian Soil Classification System, as well as startegies of preservation of these sites, with participation of the local community, and environmental education programs.
