Abstract: This text presents the results of a research that sought to analyze basic arithmetic knowledge to teach in primary schools in Maranhão, starting with elementary schools in São Paulo, 1890-1895. In this investigation, Regulations, Decrees, Laws and Programs for teaching arithmetic in the states of Maranhão (MA) and São Paulo (SP), 1890-1895 are used as a research source. The theoretical-methodological tools are historical in nature, bibliographical and documentary in nature for understanding and constructing the research object. We considered the studies of Le Goff (1990; 1994); Certeau (1982; 2013); Chervel (1990); Farias Filho (1998) and Valente (2008; 2014; 2015) and authors from Maranhão, such as: Oliveira (1874); Andrade (1984); Tribuzi (1981); Meireles (2001) and Saldanha (2008). Preliminary results indicate that, based on the inventoried sources analyzed, there was an approximation in the teaching program of the primary school in Maranhão in relation to the primary education program in São Paulo. Clues also pointed out that the diffusion of the teaching model of São Paulo, produced resonances in the teaching and training of teachers from Maranhão.
