Abstract: Introduction: Historically, depression is a recurrent and chronic illness, with a global prevalence of approximately 5%. During the pandemic, the rate of depression increased to 25%, making it the 4th most common occupational illness. The most commonly used treatment for depression is antidepressants (ADs), which act on the central nervous system, increasing the availability of neurotransmitters. However, prolonged use of ADs has been associated with possible comorbidities, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Despite the increasing consumption of antidepressants, research on long-term risks is limited, making reviewing studies essential to understanding these issues. Discussion: Our study generally evaluated the class of antidepressants, observing the relationship with the increase in suggested comorbidities. It is important to highlight that each comorbidity was assessed individually to facilitate understanding, but this does not negate the effects that one may have in relation to the other. Some authors presented information suggesting the positive influence of ADs on comorbidities, unlike others who, in addition to denying this relationship, suggested beneficial effects. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review using as a basis the methodology of Mendes et al, 2008. The searches for academic materials were carried out on the PUBMED and BVSALUD platforms from 2000 to 2022. Results: 2,328 articles were found after search with selected descriptors. After applying eligibility criteria, 45 articles were pre-selected by title. After reading the abstracts, 34 articles were excluded, leaving only 11 articles that were used in the construction of this review. Conclusion: We identified limitations in practical applications, due to uncontrollable factors, leading to inconsistent conclusions. The divergence between research highlights deficiencies in recent studies.
