Abstract: Herbicides are widely used in large-scale agriculture, playing a crucial role in food production. However, they can have negative effects on various organisms, especially when they enter bodies of water. Monitoring the presence and effects of herbicides in water sources is essential for sustainable agriculture, especially in Brazil, one of the largest consumers and producers of food in the world, which has a significant amount of water resources. When a herbicide is applied to soil pre-emergence, it is subject to sorption, leaching and degradation processes, influenced by physical, chemical and biological factors. In this context, this text proposes a review that addresses physical and chemical factors of herbicides and the concept of leaching and its potential. Furthermore, examples of herbicides recently detected in water bodies in Brazil and techniques for their detection and quantification in water are presented.
