Abstract: The use of medicinal plants as the main source of resource for the treatment of diseases has been seen as a characteristic in rural communities, for cultural reasons or even because of difficulties in accessing conventional health treatments. Thus, the objective was to establish how this relationship occurs, focusing on the use of plants for medicinal purposes in different rural communities in the State of Piauí, through a bibliographical research of studies that report this ethnobotanical axis in the region. The research was carried out in databases of digital academic texts, periodicals, books and collections of dissertations and theses, national and international. The main ones used are Academic Google, Web of Science, Scielo, Capes Periodicals and Scopus (Elsevier). Using keywords, including: "ethnobotany", "medicinal plants", "cultivation of medicinal plants", "rural communities in Piauí and ethnobanics", "ethnobotany in Piauí". In order to then carry out the proper characterization and evaluation of the materials. It was noted that most of the works report a quantitative characterization of the variables regarding ethnobotanical knowledge, and highlight native species as the main species used. Studies with this focus have intensified in the last decade. These contribute considerably to the preservation of popular knowledge and knowledge about medicinal species in the region, as well as those cultivated.
