RESTAURANTES E CAFÉS: OS LUGARES DE SOCIABILIDADES E GASTRONOMIA NO RECIFE DA SEGUNDA METADE DO SÉCULO XIX
Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar os principais restaurantes e cafés do
Recife da segunda metade do século XIX e a relação que estes espaços de convivência possuíram com o processo de modernização da cidade. A capital pernambucana passava por um momento de crescimento, baseado nos moldes
europeus de modernização como sinônimo de progresso, desde o primórdios do Oitocentos. Em meados do século XIX, os restaurantes e cafés começaram a surgir na cidade como espaços de sociabilidades “modernos”, adequados aos novos tempos. Estudar estes espaços de gastronomia e sociabilidades nos ajuda a entender o Recife do período, além de resgatar a memória afetiva da cidade, partindo do princípio de que a gastronomia é um importante indício para o estudo sociocultural de um povo.

Abstract:
This paper aims to present the main restaurants and cafes in Recife during the second half of the 19th century and the relationship between them and that the modernization process of the city. The capital of Pernambuco was going through a period of growth, based on the European´s logic of modernization as a synonym for progress, since the early nineteenth century. In the middle of the 19th century, restaurants and cafes began to appear in the city as spaces of “modern” sociability, adapted to the new times. Studying these spaces of gastronomy and sociability helps us to understand how was the city and to rescuing the affective memory of it, assuming that gastronomy is an important indication for the sociocultural study of a people.
