Abstract: The discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928 revolutionized medicine by introducing the first antibiotic, saving millions of lives and extending life expectancy by up to 30 years in developed countries. However, Fleming correctly predicted that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics could lead to the emergence of resistant microorganisms. Over the years, the intensive and inappropriate use of these medicines has resulted in the selection of microorganisms capable of resisting the effects of antibiotics, becoming one of the biggest public health challenges faced today. Antimicrobial resistance primarily affects bacteria, but also extends to fungi and protozoa, making it a significant concern in hospital settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) released recent reports highlighting the urgency in finding new strategies to combat this problem, considering that microbial resistance is the third leading cause of death worldwide. The emergence of resistant microorganisms leads not only to medical consequences, but also to significant costs for healthcare systems, with estimates reaching US$30 billion annually in treatments and hospitalizations. Given this scenario, research is focused on the development of new therapeutic strategies, including the combined use of natural products and antimicrobial drugs, seeking effective alternatives to combat microbial resistance and guarantee the effectiveness of medical treatments.
