Abstract: Gram-negative bacilli are important causes of hospital infections, especially in neonatal intensive units (UTN/UCN). Several studies have shown a correlation between infection and colonization. Serratia marcescens, a bacterium commonly linked to outbreaks in these units and is multi-resistant, constitutes a threat to this population. The present study aimed to characterize the molecular profile of bacteria of the Serratia genus at the UTN of the Hospital Universitário de Londrina (HUL). Samples were reactivated from stock and cultured in Trypticasein Soy Broth (TSB). After overnight incubation, the broths were subcultured on MacConkey Agar. The colonies that developed were identified using manual methodology standardized by Jorgensen and collaborators (2015) and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were carried out using the disk diffusion method, in accordance with CLSI (2017). 37 samples were found positive for multidrug-resistant S. marcescens. Of these, 4 were positive for the TEM gene, 3 for CTX-M1, 1 for the CTX-M2 and CTX-M9 genes and 0 samples were positive for the SHV and CTX-M25 genes. The CTX-M8 gene proved to be prevalent in the population analyzed, with 22 positive samples. Gastrointestinal colonization could play an important role in maintaining outbreaks. Taking into account the difficulty of treatment and the vulnerability of newborns, prevention and continuous monitoring of these units are important resources for controlling morbidity and mortality.
