Abstract: Introduction – A deeper level of Spirituality / Religiosity (E/R) can reflect in individuals’ better health care and, possibly, a more favorable nutritional status. Objective - To evaluate E/R influence on health parameters and nutritional status of adult patients assisted in a University’s Nutrition clinic-school of São Paulo-SP. Method - This was a cross-sectional study, carried out with patients treated over the past two years at the school-clinic. Information on lifestyle and nutritional status was collected from medical records. Patients answered the following questionnaires remotely: DUREL-which addresses the main domains of religiosity, already validated in Brazil; FICA-which addresses four different dimensions of E/R, such as faith, beliefs, and influence. The present study investigated the associations between categorical variables using the chi-square test, and correlations between E/R and other variables were analyzed. Results - The sample consisted of 49 patients, predominantly women (77.5%), with mean age of 35.5 years old. Most patients were not smokers (93.9%), 51% did not consume alcoholic beverages, and 61,2% were physically active. Most patients considered themselves spiritualized (76%) and that their religious beliefs helped to deal with health problems (82%). A moderate and inverse correlation between BMI and intrinsic religiosity (r=-0.39; p=0.005) was found. Being part of a religious community was correlated with the absence of alcohol consumption (p=0.004) and patients with more faith used less medication (p=0.027). Conclusions - Important components of E/R were associated with lower consumption of alcohol and medications. In contrast to that, the relationship between BMI and E/R needs to be better investigated.
