Abstract: Periodontal disease is a persistent infection of the tissues supporting the teeth, including the gums, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligaments. This disease is primarily caused by a bacterial infection and can worsen if the immune system's reaction fails. Although the effects on oral health are well documented, chronic inflammation and microbial dysbiosis have been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, and respiratory disorders, among others. Despite the impact of periodontal disease on ocular homeostasis has been the focus of current scientific debate, a lack of precise data needs further epidemiological and clinical research. In this context, the current review proposes to critically examine the pathophysiological relationship between periodontal disease and a variety of ocular manifestations, including diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, scleritis, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and lens opacification (cataract).
