Abstract: The relationship between animal welfare and productivity in beef and dairy cattle has been the subject of several studies in recent years. The literature indicates that inadequate management, environmental conditions, and health status negatively impact production rates, resulting in lower weight gain, poor feed conversion, and increased incidence of diseases. Thus, the objective of this literature review was to survey information related to animal welfare and productivity in beef and dairy cattle. To this end, information was collected from scientific databases such as SciELO, Google Scholar, and PubMed. In dairy systems, welfare is directly associated with increased production, improved milk quality, and reduced diseases such as mastitis and metabolic disorders. In meat production systems, humane management during the breeding, transportation, and slaughter stages favors better zootechnical outcomes and carcass quality. Factors such as thermal comfort, balanced nutrition, health, absence of pain and stress, and positive interactions between the animal and the rural worker are widely discussed in the literature as determinants of maximizing productivity. Thus, the adoption of practices that promote animal welfare not only meets ethical and legal standards but also represents an effective strategy for improving efficiency and profitability in beef and dairy farming.
