Abstract: Low back pain is generally associated with the musculoskeletal system, and can be classified into four groups in relation to its etiology: 1) irritation of the lumbar roots resulting from the degenerative process of the small posterior joints, 2) increased curvature of the spine that accentuates the condition of lordosis, 3) greater pressure on the facet joints resulting from weakness in the abdominal muscles, and 4) asymmetry of the lumbar facet joints. The purinergic system involves cellular responses to nucleotides such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and nucleosides such as adenosine, which act as extracellular messengers through connection with their respective receptors involved in all organs and systems. This study highlights the complexity of low back pain and the importance of an integrated approach, not only considering the biomechanical aspects, but also the neurobiological and psychosocial aspects for effective management of the condition.
