Abstract: This essay examines the interconnections between folklore, art, culture, society, and history, emphasizing the dynamic nature and ongoing relevance of folklore in contemporary times. Grounded in foundational definitions by folklorists and scholars such as Câmara Cascudo and Alan Dundes, the study analyzes the historical evolution of the concept of folklore and its institutionalization as a field of research, with particular emphasis on the Brazilian context. The analysis delves into the substantial connections between folklore and artistic expressions, elucidating how popular traditions have served as inspiration and a source of revitalization for various forms of artistic expression, ranging from Brazilian modernism to classical music and performing arts. Notably, artists such as Tarsila do Amaral and Heitor Villa-Lobos are highlighted for their significant contributions in incorporating folkloric elements into their works. In addressing the relations between culture and folklore, the analysis focuses on the dynamics between tradition and modernity, drawing on theoretical perspectives from scholars such as Peter Burke and Néstor García Canclini. It speculates on the crucial role of folklore in preserving collective memory and forming cultural identities, as well as its remarkable adaptability in the face of challenges posed by globalization. The conclusion underscores the great importance of folklore as a repository of wisdom, an inexhaustible source of creativity, and a fundamental element for maintaining cultural diversity. It argues that the systematic study and valorization of folklore are imperatives not only for understanding the past but also for constructing a culturally rich and socially cohesive future. Folklore is presented as a dynamic force with the potential to establish bridges between traditions and innovations, offering valuable perspectives for addressing contemporary challenges.
