Abstract: The degradation of natural resources has categorically affected the quality of water available for supply due to the damage caused to water systems. The population increase brought with it a great lack in the availability of drinking water, requiring a high volume of water treated by Water Treatment Plants. WTPs generate a high amount of waste, mainly resulting from decanters, filter washing water and cleaning of chemical tanks, composed of substances harmful to the environment – such as the presence of heavy metals, which impose the urgency of prior treatment at their disposal. Due to its composition, which commonly presents a humidity greater than 95%, the costs for environmentally correct transportation and final disposal are high, bringing the reduction of its volume as a technically and economically viable alternative.
