Abstract: Starting from the initial concept of competitiveness proposed by Michael Porter, who highlighted the influence of the macroeconomic environment and firm productivity on the competitiveness of firms and nations and, really, on the standard of living of their inhabitants, this paper addresses the importance of the cost of electricity as an external factor affecting competitive advantage. It reviews very synthetically Argentina's oscillating economic policy regarding the electricity sector, from the deregulation and privatisation of the 1990s to the recent lack of investment and the implementation of subsidies. The differential characteristics of the electricity market are analysed, such as the variability of demand and the need to balance supply and demand in real time, pointing out the inefficiencies and problems of the distribution network, including congestion and under-utilisation of installed capacity. Finally, technological solutions such as distributed generation and efficient demand management are explored, highlighting the fundamental role of smart grids to modernise the system and improve efficiency, reliability and the integration of renewable energies.
