Abstract: towards the middle of the sixteen century, England increases its consumption of wood. Trade, armed forces, industry and population growth generate different pressures on forests. The monarchy will respond with inconsistent forestry policies, from the limitation to the widespread sale of timber rights. By the end of the seventeen century, most consumption of wood as fuel is replaced by coal, except in one sector: iron production. Along with the manufacture of warships, ironworks continued to stock up on forests. Starting from the analysis of a royal edict, promulgated by Elizabeth I in 1563, which prohibits bloomeries (a specific type of iron furnace) in Furness, Lancashire, this paper researches the ecological and technological consequences of the replacement of bloomeries by blast furnaces in that country.
