Abstract: The issue of workers' health has gained increasing visibility in contemporary media, and negligence in relation to this issue emerges as an aggravating factor for the development of the work environment in the Brazilian context. This essay addresses Bernardino Ramazzini's perspective on the formation of occupational medicine, exploring the history and evolution of the concept, as well as the terminological variations that the term has experienced since its origins to the present day. In this way, we seek to establish connections between the term and the daily reality of workers, with special attention to the illnesses manifested by washerwomen, considering the impacts of these conditions in coping with changes related to the work environment, economic factors, psychological aspects and the historical context in which they are inserted. In summary, this essay offers a critical analysis of the trajectory of occupational medicine from Ramazzini's contributions to contemporary developments, highlighting the relevance of worker health care as an essential component for the construction of healthier and more productive work environments.
