Abstract: This account is about an experience lived by a Black woman, a professor and doctoral student in the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM). The text will describe an incident that occurred on a boat trip, based on a question posed by a woman with a racialized stereotype: whether I was a "street vendor" or a saleswoman. My intention is not to demean these professions; I want to draw attention to the racial apparatus that effectively operates in our social interactions with our Black bodies. The question raised several questions for me: why would a woman who didn't know me approach me with those questions? I intend to offer some theoretical and empirical reflections on the case, which, historically and socially, is not an isolated incident, but rather, on how society is and becomes racist daily in its various subjective and collective manifestations. As a researcher, I realize I missed the opportunity to delve deeper into that intervention, whether or not those professions are, seeking to understand the reason for those questions. Since I didn't question the account, it will remain hypothetical, which in turn has its historical constructions of Black identity in Brazil. Therefore, this experience report will be discussed in light of theoretical discussions and narratives that help explain the reasons for that questioning. I will seek theoretical foundations in Sueli Carneiro, Barbara Carine, Conceição Evaristo, Frantz Fanon, Silvio Almeida, Chimanda Ngozi Adiche, and others that will help me understand and develop the topic at hand: my personal experience with racism.
