Abstract: The rapid identification of wood species in environmental inspection actions still represents a challenge due to the diversity of tropical woods and the increasing sophistication of document fraud. Chemical screening methods have stood out as complementary alternatives to traditional anatomical approaches. This study presents an in-depth review on the application of chromogenic reagents with selective affinity for metallic ions—with emphasis on Chromazurol S (CAS)—for the visual detection of aluminum in woody tissues, a characteristic present in several tropical accumulator species. The review also discusses the use of X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) as a nondestructive confirmatory technique for elemental identification, evaluating its analytical potential, limitations, operational requirements, and forensic applicability. The literature results indicate that the integration between rapid colorimetric tests and instrumental analyses can strengthen inspection procedures, improve the screening of suspicious wood, and contribute to the materiality of environmental infractions. The consolidation of this approach, however, depends on standardized protocols, validation studies, and interlaboratory evaluations that ensure its technical and legal robustness.
