Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030, plays a central role in the fight for social justice and equity in Brazil. This article analyzes the application of this prescription in quilombola communities, recognizing their territorial, historical, and cultural specificities. The lack of effective public policies for basic sanitation in these communities reinforces structural inequalities inherited from the colonial and post-abolitionist period. Based on recent data from the 2022 IBGE Census, specialized literature, and interviews with quilombola leaders in the State of Rio de Janeiro, it is argued that the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal in quilombola communities requires intersectional policies, respect for territorial autonomy, participatory mechanisms that value traditional knowledge, and the use of local indicators to identify basic sanitation and water collection problems.
