Abstract: We seek to expose the place that Latin America has in history and social science textbooks, in order to perceive the permanences and changes, inclusions and exclusions, and whether the contents exposed in the books have enabled the construction of alterity and citizen consciousness. We used the comparative methodology in the analysis of books produced and used in Brazil, Chile and Spain, whose time frame is between the years 2005 and 2015, when there was still the presence of governments that were consistent with the construction of a citizen and inclusive democracy. The results obtained with Brazil and Chile lead us to point out that textbooks are not enabling the construction of integration and the formation of regional identity ties. From Spain, we see that textbooks are still far from fulfilling their role in the process of building otherness and citizen consciousness. Spanish books continue to favor an image of Latin America that presents itself as the dessert of a menu, whose main course is the history of Spain itself.
