Abstract: The Fourth Colony is a region that is located in the central part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This place stands out for the natural and cultural beauties belonging to its territory. The region of the Fourth Colony is composed of nine municipalities which are: RestingaSêca, Agudo, São João do Polêsine, Dona Francisca, Faxinal do Soturno, Ivorá, Silveira Martins, Nova Palma and Pinhal Grande. For having a unique geological singularity, the region was recognized as GeoparkQuartaColônia by the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). However, despite this relevance, it is necessary that the region's residents understand the importance of this place and its natural and cultural beauties. It is necessary that the population preserve this heritage for a sustainable regional development. For this, it is important that the residents feel they belong to this region and that they care for the preservation and conservation of this natural and cultural heritage, and the dissemination of Environmental Education in schools and communities is a relevant tool for this. Thus, Environmental Education becomes essential for the formation of active citizens in society and in favor of sustainability.
