Humans fear insects for numerous reasons, including disease transmission such as dengue, chikungunya, and zika by the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), Chagas disease by the kissing bug Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae); as well as fear of cockroaches (Blattodea: Blattidae) for carrying human pathogens; “painful” encounters with wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae); and finally, the numerous pest species that cause economic losses, particularly to the agricultural sector. Anyway, there are plenty of reasons to want insects to be killed but the question always arises: Why rear them?
