Abstract: The city of Volta Redonda presented a large demographic evolution with the industrialization of the region. Therefore, it is essential to monitor such activities using techniques that enable the detection of soil contamination in order to minimize environmental impacts. Geochemical analysis of biomarkers allows the identification of the contributions of biogenical and anthropogenic sources of organic matter. This study aims to conduct geochemical analyses of soil sediments to detect aromatic hydrocarbons, which are classified as priorities by environmental protection agencies due to their threat to human health and ecosystem integrity. Four soil sediments samples were extracted by ultrasound, separated by column chromatography, and analyzed by Gas Chromatography coupled with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that most compounds from anthropogenic sources are related to combustion, although there is also a contribution from plants and other biogenic sources. Additionally, the findings showed that concentrations of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exceed legal limits.
