Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about changes in people's lifestyles that have affected environmental conditions, such as pollutant emissions. This study assessed the quality of rainwater and the levels of specific atmospheric pollutants based on pre and post-COVID-19 data analysis from a rainwater harvesting system in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Over 90 samples of precipitation volumes between 2018 and 2022 were analyzed from a rainwater harvesting system installed in the Maracanã neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The analyzed parameters for rainwater quality were pH, turbidity, and electrical conductivity. The atmospheric pollutants, obtained from the MonitorAr System of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, included carbon monoxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. The rainwater samples showed a decrease in pH averages for all sampling points, while turbidity exhibited an increase in averages during the pre and post-pandemic period. The average conductivity decreased during the analyzed period, except for samples obtained from the main reservoir. In rainwater treatment, the initial volume discharge device (first flush) played a significant role in retaining pollutants, reducing their transport to the reservoir. It can be concluded that there were changes in rainwater quality patterns between the pre and post-pandemic periods; however, no significant correlations were found between atmospheric pollution loads and the stored volume of rainwater.
