Abstract: Intensive fish farming, especially focused on the production of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), represents a significant sector within Brazilian aquaculture. Despite technological and productivity advancements, the activity generates considerable volumes of wastewater with high organic load and nutrient concentrations, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. This study aims to discuss the critical water quality parameters and the environmental effects associated with the discharge of aquaculture effluents, based on scientific literature and regulatory guidelines. The findings indicate that imbalances in variables such as pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and ammonia directly affect the zootechnical performance of tilapia and contribute to eutrophication and acidification of aquatic ecosystems. The implementation of appropriate wastewater treatment systems, combined with efficient nutritional management, is essential to ensure the sustainability of the activity.
