Abstract: Environmental monitoring has the capacity to generate historical records for a region or micro-basin, or municipality, and it is sometimes the motivator for scientific study prior to the installation of a project. In this work, the monitoring study aims to consider the water resources of the study area, as well as the use and occupation of the soil and the quality of the surface water of the microbasin in which the first sanitary landfill was implemented in São Borja, RS. The methodology included the assembly of a geographic database using multispectral images from Landsat 8 and 9 satellites as well as topographic maps. SRTM models obtained from Earth Explorer were also imported to understand the topography of the region. The delimitation of the sanitary landfill micro-basin was carried out, the delimited area is contained between BR 287 and a municipal road through which the railway line passed. The quality of the water in the canals was evaluated through collections, some parameters were measured in the field (“in situ”) and others were determined in the laboratory (“ex situ”). Some parameters presented values that generate concern, the dissolved oxygen is what most caught the attention of the researchers, an essential gas for the aquatic life of living beings. The fact that the study was carried out in the period preceding the operation of the landfill guarantees its environmental relevance in the history of studies carried out in the municipality. The fieldwork and the assembly of the geographic database, using remote sensing techniques, allowed us to conclude that the microbasin has a high level of agricultural activity.
