Abstract: The objective of this article is to present the main foundations and concepts for psychotherapy from a phenomenological-existential perspective, for clinical and hospital practice. The central concepts of existential psychotherapy are: existence, existential project, authenticity, freedom and choice. From this perspective, psychotherapy aims to facilitate self-knowledge and autonomy for the person being treated so that he or she can freely assume his or her existence in the world. An exploratory bibliographical research was carried out using academic texts, books, electronic libraries and databases of scientific publications that provided support for approaching the proposed theme. It is considered that existential psychotherapy poses challenges to the psychotherapist in terms of knowledge of the foundations and intervention strategies, and consideration of the experience in the therapeutic encounter, in the clinic and in the hospital environment.
