Abstract: Although breastfeeding guarantees health benefits for the mother and baby in the short and long term, the presence of pain and nipple trauma related to breastfeeding can result in early weaning. Due to its unique properties in photo biomodulation, Low-intensity LASER therapy is seen as an adjuvant for the treatment of wounds, however, there is a scarcity of a clinical protocol regarding its use in traumatic nipple injuries. Clinical protocols facilitate organization and clinical reasoning, ensuring quality of care. The purpose of this study is to present a proposal for a protocol and flowchart for the management of traumatic nipple injuries in a hospital environment, using this specific type of light, with an outcome in the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding. Health professionals organized the proposed tools based on theoretical-scientific discussion during four months in the current year. A clinical protocol and flowchart of Low-Intensity LASER Therapy for traumatic nipple injuries resulted. It is concluded that the proposed tools help define the diagnostic criteria for these injuries and therapeutic assistance for analgesia, tissue repair, breastfeeding management, and breast care, favoring the safety and effectiveness of maternal and child care offered and the maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding.
