Abstract: Biosurfactants are surfactants composed of complex molecules, produced mainly through the cultivation of microorganisms, which have various applications, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, environmental protection and recovery of oily residues. Considering the importance of this bioproduct as an alternative to fossil-derived products, the objective of this work was to analyze the various forms of biosurfactant production from the data collected through the search for patent documents that concern the production of biosurfactant. The search was carried out using keywords and codes from the International Patent Classification in the European Office's database, Espacenet. The first patent identified dates back to 1979, originating in Canada. The country with the highest number of patents filed related to the production of biosurfactants was China, with more than half of the documents found, but the company with the highest number of filings is the North American Locus IP CO. The most observed form of production was through the cultivation of bacteria, mainly those of the genus Bacillus.
