Abstract: Obesity, recognized as a global epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), represents one of the greatest public health challenges in the 21st century, being classified as a serious health problem. This condition is characterized by the excessive accumulation of body fat, compromising health and resulting in losses such as metabolic changes, respiratory and locomotor system difficulties. Furthermore, obesity is a risk factor for several diseases, including dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, type II diabetes mellitus and some types of cancer. The objective of this study is to carry out a literature review based on bibliographic materials on the topic of health promotion to control obesity. To combat the obesity epidemic, public policies and interdisciplinary initiatives must create environments that encourage and sustain healthy eating habits and levels of physical activity. This goes beyond mere information and education of the population. It should include the promotion of environments that encourage, support and protect healthy lifestyles in relation to nutrition and physical activity. This can be achieved through measures such as implementing fiscal policies that make healthy foods more accessible, regulations that restrict the advertising of unhealthy foods, and urban planning interventions to facilitate regular physical activity. Obesity is a complex problem that requires an integrated approach through effective public policies that address its multiple determinants. It is an issue that affects not only individual health, but also public health and the economy. Therefore, it is essential that governments and society work together to face this challenge in a comprehensive and sustainable way.
