Abstract: Introduction: Data regarding lower limb amputations reveal that Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most recurrent causes. In controlling the disease, diet plays a fundamental role in reducing complications, being a frequent cause of amputations, with numerous limitations. The actions of the health team and multidisciplinary support are fundamental in its reduction. Objective: To evaluate the perception of dietary restrictions advised by health professionals for a group of diabetic lower limb amputees in their postoperative period. Methodology: This is a qualitative study of thematic analysis. The sample consists of 05 men and 02 women, average age 49.6 years, attended at CADEF in Governador Valadares-MG. An interview with a semi-structured questionnaire was used as an instrument. In the theme “Diabetes mellitus and amputation” we analyzed perceptions about diet. Results: All interviewees received guidance on a diet with reduced sugar and healthy eating. Three stated they lied about their “escapes” from the diet. For all, dietary restrictions and modifications were considered impositions that are part of the treatment, carried out in a way that is not very pleasant and surrounded by difficulties in their implementation. Conclusion: Everyone realized the importance of diet, care and support from health professionals, evaluated negatively, as enforcers of the appropriate diet. Further studies may develop more pleasurable diets, helping both patients and the professional team.
