PRODUCCIÓN AGROECOLÓGICA DE HORTALIZAS CON UN GRUPO DE ADULTOS MAYORES EN FRUTILLAR, CHILE
Se trabajó con un grupo de adultos mayores de la comuna de Frutillar, Chile, para mejorar sus capacidades, habilidades y competencias técnicas para producir hortalizas con base agroecológica destinadas al autoconsumo. Se realizaron actividades de capacitación, intercambio y difusión de información, construcción conjunta y horizontal de conocimientos y trabajo práctico en un huerto urbano en la misma comuna. En comparación con el año inicial, los resultados indican un aumento de conocimiento en los principios agroecológicos y en el manejo de aspectos técnicos relacionados con la producción hortícola. La principal lección aprendida es que se puede integrar exitosamente el capital humano de la tercera edad en sistemas productivos locales destinados al autoconsumo, contribuyendo a la autogestión y a la seguridad alimentaria de ellos, y de su grupo familiar. Finalmente, el trabajo con adultos mayores es viable desde el punto de vista social y técnico, ya sea mejorando el potencial para aprender (capacidades), para hacer (habilidades), y para emplear las capacidades con excelencia (competencias).

Abstract:
We worked with a group of older adults from the commune of Frutillar, Chile, to improve their skills, abilities, and technical competencies to produce agroecological-based vegetables for self-consumption. Training activities, exchange and dissemination of information, joint and horizontal construction of knowledge and practical work were carried out in an urban garden in the same commune. Compared to the initial year, the results indicate an increase in knowledge in agroecological principles and in the management of technical aspects related to horticultural production. The main lesson learned is that the human capital of the elderly can be successfully integrated into local productive systems for self-consumption, contributing to self-management and food security for them and their family group. Finally, working with older adults is viable from the human and technical point of view, either by improving the potential to learn (skills), to do (abilities), and to use skills with excellence (competencies).
