Abstract: Sheep farming in Uruguay holds historical, economic, and social significance, notably through its contribution to the textile industry and rural development. This literature review explores the evolution of ovine production in the country, from its introduction in the 18th century to the challenges posed by the decline of the wool market and the subsequent shift toward meat production. The review highlights the role of native pastures as the primary forage base, the extensive livestock production system, the main wool-oriented sheep breeds (Corriedale, Australian Merino, and Dohne Merino), and advancements in animal welfare and management practices. The analysis underscores the relevance of sustainability, genetic adaptation, and international market demands in shaping and consolidating Uruguay’s sheep farming sector.
