Abstract: The aim of this work is to present the importance of the common bean crop in Brazilian nutrition, showing the history of its production in the country and the profile of the producers, in addition to addressing the behavior of the crop in the face of agricultural modernization. Database research was carried out for the development of a literature review. It was identified that there is a reduction in the harvested area of beans in Brazil, despite it being one of the staple foods in the country and showing growth in both production and productivity. The common bean crop is losing ground to commodities such as corn and soybeans, which are considered more economically advantageous. Thus, bean production is mainly concentrated in family farming, which corresponds to smaller land areas.
