Abstract: One of the problems that most concerns Colombian coffee growers is the germination capacity of their coffee seeds. Generally, traditional methods of seed germination estimation (sowing samples of a population) are slow, as is the germination of coffee seeds, with the investment of long time intervals, from one to two months, in the application of these methods. Other aspects that can affect the germination capacity of coffee seeds are transport and storage conditions, along with the high sensitivity of seeds to humidity and temperature. In this research work, the analysis of images captured from the dynamic speckle produced by coffee beans is carried out with the main objective of verifying the presence of live embryos in seeds in short time intervals given in minutes. The implementation of the optoelectronic system for the capture of the dynamic speckle images produced by the coffee beans and the digital processing of these images is based on a cell phone CMOS camera for the acquisition and transmission of the images with a size of 720x480 pixels, a computer for the management, reception and processing of the images, a wireless local area network, a 633 nm He-Ne laser with 10 mW of power as a source of coherent light, an optical diffuser and an aluminum surface for the placement of the seeds. This research presents good results in determining how many and which seeds germinate out of a given total. The implementation of the proposed optoelectronic system together with the digital processing of dynamic speckle images reduces the estimation time of the germination percentage from months to minutes. Finally, the results of the present research are promising for new research projects related to coffee seed sorting by mechanical systems and for crop productivity prediction research projects.
