Abstract: Mucormycosis has emerged as one of the most severe opportunistic infections associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, representing a global clinical and epidemiological challenge. Characterized by high morbidity and mortality, the disease predominantly affects individuals with metabolic comorbidities and those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. This study is an integrative literature review aimed at identifying and synthesizing the main risk factors associated with the development of mucormycosis in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Sixteen studies published between 2020 and 2025 were analyzed from the PubMed and BVS databases. The results reveal a strong correlation between diabetes mellitus, indiscriminate corticosteroid use, steroid-induced hyperglycemia, and immunosuppression as primary determinants. Additionally, other factors such as advanced age, chronic kidney disease, hematologic malignancies, and the use of tocilizumab also contributed to increased lethality. It is concluded that the clinical management of COVID-19 must include rigorous monitoring of patients with metabolic and immunological risks, prioritizing the rational use of glucocorticoids and strict glycemic control in order to reduce the incidence and mortality of mucormycosis associated with viral infection.
